When moving to a new home, it’s very likely that you’ll unearth stacks of things that you no longer need. A lot of people will see this as an opportunity to trim down their possessions and rid themselves of clutter, also using it as a chance to buy new furniture. Your new home might have a different style or vibe, requiring you to discard accessories and items of furniture in favour of new décor in order to keep with the new look.

Whatever your reasons for disposing of your possessions, you will still need to consider what you are to do with them. Whilst a lot of people tend to throw away their belongings into a landfill, there are many who are more environmentally conscious as well as those who wish to help others with their unwanted items. They wish to find more responsible ways of getting rid of the objects they no longer require.

If you are moving home and have some spare time before moving date, consider selling your unwanted property on consignment. The fees for doing this can sometimes eat into your profits, but if you have objects of particular high quality then they may just be worth your time. It might be possible for you to put money you earn towards other expenses, or indeed the cost of furniture for your new home. You can also sell items such as these on sites like eBay and Gumtree.

Another way of ridding yourself of unwanted possessions is by donating them to those who need them. Start by asking friends and family if they require any of the items that you want rid of. This can be done in person or through Facebook on a first come first serve basis. This may also save you the hassle of hauling your belongings, as some people would be keen on owning new furniture if it only entails having to haul it away.

When sorting through your closet or wardrobe, consider asking people who are a similar size to you if they might be interested in your unwanted garments. Never assume that people would be willing only to show up with boxes of old clothing for them to sift through, as many people do not wish to wear second hand clothing. Conversely, many people love getting things for free, just be sure that they are in good repair.

If none of your family or friends are interested, there are plenty of charities who would very much appreciate your old household items or clothes. Many of these charities help families after fires or other disasters have struck their house. Families such as these would certainly appreciate furniture, kitchen items and clothing.

Other charities will accept donations and use any donated items to set up resale shops. Shops such as these allow the public to purchase pre-loved items at lower costs whilst providing jobs for disabled people or others in need of employment. Profits from these stores will often go right back into the organisation to help those in need.

You can easily avoid filling landfills by selling or donating unwanted items when you move home, merely through the old adage ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’. No matter how obsolete you think an item, chances are there will be someone somewhere with a use for it. Choose one of these alternatives and go green when you move!
